NORTH STAR companies - OFFICERS & KEY PERSONNEL


Jeff Bentz, President, B.A., is the son of one of the founders of NSTS. Jeff virtually grew up in the business. He was able to operate most of the heavy equipment the in NSTS fleet at a young age. Since his official employment in 1981, Jeff has been directly involved in all aspects of the operation and administration of NSTS. The leadership and management provided by him give other managers the support necessary to develop improved cargo handling techniques and solutions for unique and heavy-lift operations. Jeff's experience in stevedoring operations and labor negotiations combined with his insight on future needs is the driving force behind the future plans and developments of NSTS.

Steve Post, Vice President, B.S., has been with NSTS since 1998. Steve is directly responsible  for new business development, strategic planning, asset modernization and customer relationship management. He also supports operations in all ports that NSTS serves.  Being with Honeywell Inc. for seventeen years he has had extensive sales and management training from a fortune 100 company. Steve’s business and interpersonal skills gives NSTS another resource to perform customer service needs, interim terminal operations and other management activities that will help the company grow. Steve is taking the lead in developing/starting a new division of the company called North Star Equipment Services (NSES) that better reflects our expansion into operated equipment services and support.

Randy Beltz North Slope Manager, has been with North Star since 2012 and is a lifelong Alaskan.  Born and raised in Fairbanks and raised in Anchorage, before raising his own family there.  He has a comprehensive 25 year background in general sales and marketing and general construction management across the entire state of Alaska.  Randy attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage and holds a master's degree in business administation from the University of Washington.  He has been involved as a volunteer or board member in many community and youth non-profit organizations over the years.  Randy is responsible for our North Slope operations and business development needs in the mining market.

Scott Vierra, Business Development Representative, joined NSES in 2014.

Brad Robertson, Anchorage Operations Manager. Brad has been with North Star since 1998 and came to North Star from Seattle based tug and barge carriers. He has a tremendous amount of experience scheduling and directing longshore gangs, preparing stow plans and coordinating equipment operations. Additionally, Brad coordinates/implements North Star’s HSE program, is active with the Anchorage Port Commission and is heading up Anderson Dock’s homeland security needs.

Louis Hebert, Manager of Accounting. 

Laura Marshall, Seward Office Manager/Superintendent, has resided in Seward since 1976 and has supported NSTS operations since 1981. She has a proven record of adaptability and professionalism. She has assumed increased responsibilities in both administrative and operational functions. Although Laura routinely supports the administrative side of the business including payroll, payables, and receivables, she has the ability to fill in and assist with stevedore operations as needed. Laura’s flexibility and many years experience in the stevedoring business provides added flexibility and depth to the Seward operations team.

Ryan Sontag, Valdez Terminal Manager

Wayne Barrowcliff, Homer Operations Manager, joined NSTS in 1989. While living in Kachemak Bay area, Wayne accumulated more than 20 years of log loading experience. His logging background began with work in Jackaloff Bay in 1974 while working for South Central Timber. He started as a log loading crewmember and advanced to foreman.  NSTS took advantage of Wayne’s management skills and logging experience when we hired him as superintendent of Export Log Loading. He was promoted to his current position of Operations Manager in 1992. In that position, Wayne controls all aspects of our current operation in Homer. He has been involved in developing the Port of Homer into a log and chip handling facility. With his knowledge and expertise of log loading, he has trained an excellent stevedoring crew to load these products to ships and barges. His negotiating skills and good rapport with local labor have enabled NSTS to successfully provide cost effective manning for the wood chip facility in Homer since its commencement of operation. His innovative ideas and familiarity with the community and surrounding area are a key part of our involvement to promote and further develop the Port of Homer.
