Terminal and Stevedoring Services

North Star Terminal and Stevedore Co., LLC began operations in Anchorage in 1950.

Since that time, we’ve developed into the largest full service stevedoring company in Alaska. Major areas of business include terminal operations and management, stevedore services, heavy equipment operations, and special project research & management.  Our primary places of business include Valdez, Seward, Homer, Dutch Harbor and our headquarters in Anchorage.

We are flexible enough to set up operations most anywhere in Alaska.

Anchorage Terminal

Major features of Anderson Terminal (Anchorage, Alaska) are a 376′ dock face, 150′ module loading berth, landing craft ramps, 22+ acres of facility land and direct rail access. These capabilities allow us to facilitate projects as simple as scrap steel handling and storage to as complex as oil field module creation and load-out. We can handle just about anything, safely, on time, and efficiently.

We can staff and manage your terminal too. Cargo moving across our berth in Anchorage ranges from crushed cars to lumber, to new automobiles, modular housing, bulk products and containerized freight – to name a few. We have a full range of light to heavy lift equipment to ensure your operation is carried through to completion.

Land leases are available in the winter months for your off-season projects.

Dutch Harbor

The Port of Dutch Harbor / City of Unalaska has been the number one fishing port in the United States for the past many years in terms of tonnage landed and dollar value.

To handle the ship traffic and the large amounts of fish requires a high degree of expertise and experience in marine terminal operations. North Star Terminal and our new partner, Sundance Stevedoring, makes a perfect fit.

In the early seventies North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company established an office in Dutch Harbor to perform stevedoring work for trampers loading crab as well as other species of fish. Since then, our Dutch Harbor operations have grown to include a complete array of waterfront capabilities. Recently, Sundance Stevedoring has greatly improved container stuffing that has resulted in lower costs and greater volumes per container.

Today, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company and Sundance Stevedoring continues to perform a full range of stevedoring services at the City Dock, manage local union longshoreman and meet the ever changing needs of the fishing fleet.

Homer

Since 1989, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company has been providing full service stevedore services for the Homer Spit Port Facilities.

As the major port of call for log ships during the early 90’s log export boom, North Star insured the Port of Homer was ready and able to handle the massive exodus of logs across the New Deep Water Dock.

During the 1989 oil spill this dock proved its worth. North Star Terminal Employee’s were able to handle multiple vessels, heavy loading and off-loading traffic and manage massive yard inventories in a safe and efficient manner.

Today, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company furnishes a full range of marketing and stevedoring services at the City of Homer’s deep water docks. These include handling all types of cargo and vessels. From logs and chips to landing craft and cruise ships, we assure the City receives full benefit of its terminal.

Seward

Since 1947, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company (formerly Northern Stevedoring and Handling Co.) has partnered with the Alaska Rail Road to operate and oversee activities at their Seward Dock.

North Star Terminal has developed a reputation for being flexible. We have shown the ability to diversify our stevedoring duties to include handling of various freight commodities. From steel and lumber products, fish, fuel, equipment, bulk cargo to passenger baggage transfers for the cruise industry.

Between 1975-1977 North Star unloaded Trans-Alaskan pipeline materials seven days a week.
Between 1978-1980 North Star serviced rig boats working the Gulf of Alaska.

In 1989, our people worked 24 hours a day supplying vessels working on the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Recently, North Star has been providing a full line of stevedoring services, including equipment support for cruise ships, general barge activity and pipe for the North Slope Oil Fields.

Valdez

Since 1952, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company has partnered with the City of Valdez to operate and oversee operations for the Valdez Dock Company. Back in the early eighties we consulted with City to design a new dock facility. The Valdez Container Dock with a draft of 55 feet and at 700 feet long by 100 feet wide, is one of the largest floating concrete docks in the world.

As the major port of call for pipe ships during the construction of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline over 700 miles of the 48 inch pipe used was offloaded by North Star Terminal’s team at the Valdez Dock.

During the 1989 oil spill this dock proved its worth. North Star Terminal Employee’s were able to handle multiple vessels, heavy loading and off-loading traffic and manage massive yard inventories in a safe and efficient manner.

Today, North Star Terminal and Stevedore Company furnishes a full range of stevedoring services at the Valdez Container Terminal. These include handling all types of cargo and vessels. From logs and pipe to landing craft and cruise ships, we assure the City receives full benefit of its terminal.
